Thanksgiving Day Reflection

Gratitude Focused

Scripture

Colossians 3:15-17

“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

Devotion

Thanksgiving Day itself arrives mid-November. Regardless of how you celebrate—with family, alone, with community, or differently—this day invites you to pause and let gratitude be central. Paul writes that thanksgiving should permeate everything: your words, your deeds, your songs, your relationships. Let gratitude be not a moment of forced thankfulness before eating but the atmosphere in which your entire day is held. As you gather (in whatever form) to eat and be together, notice the gratitude present. Notice the abundance of food, the privilege of gathering, the presence of people you care about. If gathering is painful—if there are empty chairs of people who have passed away or relationships that are broken—let gratitude include honoring those absences. If you are alone, let gratitude include solitude, quiet, and God's presence. If you are with difficult people, let gratitude include the growth that comes from relationship even when it is hard. The invitation is not toxic positivity that denies legitimate pain. The invitation is that no matter your circumstances, gratitude can be the framework in which you hold your day. Gratitude does not deny reality. It transcends reality by finding meaning, grace, and God's presence within whatever circumstances you face. This Thanksgiving Day, let gratitude rule your heart and transform your day.

Today’s Step

Before eating or celebrating, pause. Acknowledge both what you are grateful for and what you are grieving. Hold both. Give thanks.

Prayer

God, help me to let gratitude rule my heart today. Help me to see what is good even in what is hard. Help my Thanksgiving to honor the full truth of my life. Help me to give thanks with my whole heart.
