Week Two: Simplicity

Simplicity & Focus

Scripture

Luke 12:15

“"Then he said to them, "Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed, for life does not consist in the abundance of possessions.""”

Devotion

Mid-December is when holiday excess becomes visible. Stores are crowded. Credit card bills accumulate. Gift lists multiply. Children's (and adults') desires seem endless. In this context, Jesus speaks about greed and warns that life does not consist of abundance of possessions. What would it mean to celebrate Christmas with radical simplicity? What if you gave fewer gifts but chose them with intention? What if you spent less money but more time? What if you simplified decorations, simplified meals, simplified expectations? Simplicity is not deprivation; it is focus. When you have less, you appreciate more. When you give fewer gifts, each one is chosen with care. When meals are simpler, the gathering is more central. When decorations are minimal, what remains stands out. Simplicity is a spiritual practice that frees you from the burden of excess and the anxiety of never having enough. It redirects your energy from accumulating to appreciating. This December, where can you practice simplicity? What can you say no to? What can you reduce? What can you eliminate so that what remains is more meaningful? The irony is that by simplifying Christmas, you experience it more fully. You are less exhausted, less anxious, and more present. You notice more. You appreciate more. You connect more deeply. This is the gift of simplicity: not less joy, but more. Not deprivation, but freedom.

Today’s Step

Choose one area of Christmas excess. How can you simplify it? What will become more meaningful when you reduce it?

Prayer

God, help me to resist greed and excess. Help me to choose simplicity. Help me to see that life is not in possessions but in presence. Help my Christmas to be simple and deep.
