Incarnation Approaching

Sacred Mystery

Scripture

John 1:1-5

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing has been made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

Devotion

John begins his gospel by speaking about the Word—not a baby, not a helpless infant, but the divine Word through which all things were made. And then John says something stunning: The Word became flesh. Infinite became finite. Eternity entered time. God became human. This is the mystery at the heart of Christmas. This is what December celebrates. The Incarnation is not a problem to be solved but a mystery to be pondered. It is not logical. It is not reasonable. It is shocking, vulnerable, audacious. God, who could have remained distant, chose intimacy. God, who could have remained powerful, chose vulnerability. God, who could have remained transcendent, chose to enter the human condition fully and completely. To understand this—not intellectually but spiritually—is to be changed. Because if God thought you were worth dying for, if God thought your life, your story, your struggle was important enough to enter the world for, then your life matters. You matter. Your questions matter. Your pain matters. Your joy matters. You are not insignificant. You are not forgotten. You are loved by a God who became human to prove it. As you move into the final weeks of the year, let this mystery transform you. Let the Incarnation not be an old story but a living truth: God loves you so much that God became you—not literally, but metaphorically, entering fully into the human experience so you would know you are never alone.

Today’s Step

Contemplate the Incarnation. What does it mean that God became human? How does this change you?

Prayer

God, help me to grasp the mystery of the Incarnation. Help me to understand how deeply I am loved. Help this truth to transform me. Help me to believe that I matter because You became human for me.
