The Journey Continues
Persistent Growth
Scripture
Philippians 3:12-14
“Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me... Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”
Devotion
Paul speaks of the spiritual life not as destination but as journey. He has not arrived. He is still becoming. He is still pressing forward. This is the truth about spiritual growth: It never ends. You never perfect it. You never check the box and move on. The spiritual life is a continuous journey of becoming more loving, more faithful, more true, more free, more alive. This month of devotional reading ends, but the spiritual journey continues. The practices you have learned—gratitude, forgiveness, love, stillness, trust—are not completed in 365 days. They are lifelong disciplines. Tomorrow, you start again. Not because you failed but because this is how transformation works. It is repetitive, gradual, continuous. Like physical exercise or learning an instrument, the spiritual life requires practice. It requires showing up again and again. It requires patience with yourself. It requires faith that even small acts of practice accumulate into significant transformation over time. As you close this year of devotional reading, commit to the next year. Commit to continuing the journey. Commit to pressing on. Commit to not giving up. Commit to the disciplines of love, gratitude, forgiveness, presence. Commit to the long work of becoming who God calls you to be. This is the invitation of every ending: not to rest on accomplishment but to prepare for the next chapter. Press on.
Today’s Step
As this year of devotion ends, what will you commit to continuing? What practice will you maintain?
Prayer
God, help me to understand that spiritual growth is a lifelong journey. Help me to press on. Help me to not give up. Help me to continue practicing love, gratitude, forgiveness, presence. Help me to keep becoming.
