Letting Go of Judgment
Mercy & Understanding
Scripture
Matthew 7:1-2
“Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”
Devotion
Jesus is not saying judgment never happens. He is saying that the standard you use to judge others is the standard applied to you. This is not divine punishment so much as it is the logic of grace: the more merciful you are, the more mercy you receive. The more harshly you judge, the more harshly you are judged. The deeper truth is that you do not have enough information to judge another person's situation. You do not know their full story, their struggles, their constraints, or the context of their choices. But you do know this about yourself: you want to be understood, not condemned. You want mercy. Start there.
Today’s Step
Bring to mind someone you have been judging harshly. Practice telling their story differently—acknowledging the parts of their situation you do not know, imagining their struggles. See what shifts in your judgment.
Prayer
Lord, free me from the harshness of judgment. Help me to remember that I do not have the full story of anyone else's life. Give me the humility to recognize my own failings and the mercy to extend grace to others. Let me be slow to judge and quick to understand.
