The Fear of the Lord
Foundation of Wisdom
Scripture
Proverbs 1:7
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.”
Devotion
Every journey of true wisdom begins the same way: with a reverent recognition of who God is. The "fear of the Lord" in Proverbs does not mean terror—it means awe, respect, and the decision to order your life around what God has revealed. This is not a passive feeling; it is an orientation. When you establish your life on reverence for God, everything that flows from that foundation becomes stable. The fool, by contrast, has decided that his own reasoning is sufficient—he despises wisdom and rejects instruction. He is not lacking information; he is rejecting the framework that would transform information into actual wisdom. Today, as you begin this month of transformation through wisdom, you are choosing whether to build on the fear of the Lord or on your own understanding. One foundation holds; the other crumbles.
Today’s Step
Write down one way you have been building on your own understanding instead of God's. What would change if you reversed that order today?
Prayer
Lord, teach me true fear—the kind that leads not to hiding but to wholeness. Let reverence for You be the foundation on which I build this month and this year. Strip away any confidence I have placed in my own reason alone, and rebuild me on You.
