Lazy Hands
Work & Dignity
Scripture
Proverbs 10:4-5
“Lazy hands make for poverty, but diligent hands bring wealth. He who gathers crops in summer is a prudent son, but he who sleeps during harvest is a disgraceful son.”
Devotion
These proverbs are describing observable reality, not making a moral judgment about poor people. The point is simple: effort tends toward provision, laziness tends toward lack. Each season has its work, and wisdom is knowing which work belongs to each season and doing it when it is time. The son who sleeps during harvest is being wasteful because the harvest has its season—miss it, and the fruit rots in the field. This applies to every area of life. There is a season to build, a season to rest, a season to reach out, and a season to consolidate. Wisdom is recognizing which season you are in and doing the work that belongs to that season rather than wishing you were in a different season.
Today’s Step
What season are you in right now? What work belongs to this season? Do at least one significant task that this season requires of you.
Prayer
Lord, teach me to work with the seasons, not against them. Help me to recognize what my time requires of me and to show up to do it. Give me the dignity that comes from labor and the rest that comes from seasons of harvest.
