Train Up a Child
Instruction & Formation
Scripture
Proverbs 22:6
“Train up a child in the way they should go; even when they are old they will not depart from it.”
Devotion
This proverb is often interpreted as a guarantee, but it is better understood as a general principle about formation. Early teaching shapes the path of a life. A child trained in the discipline of reading, or honesty, or hard work, or respect tends to carry those practices into adulthood. The phrase "in the way they should go" suggests individual consideration—different children need different training because they have different natures, capacities, and inclinations. The wisdom is not about rigid control but about thoughtful, intentional formation. What you teach—through words, but more importantly through how you live—becomes part of the internal scaffolding by which your children (or those you influence) understand themselves and the world. This applies not just to literal children but to anyone under your influence or in your mentoring.
Today’s Step
Who has been entrusted to your influence? What are you training them toward? Is it what you intend, or has that happened by accident?
Prayer
Lord, make me intentional about my influence. Help me to train up those in my sphere not toward my ambitions but toward their true good. Give me wisdom to see their particular nature and to guide them toward their particular calling.
