Ambition and Security
Desire & Wisdom
Scripture
Proverbs 15:16
“Better a little with the fear of the Lord than great wealth with turmoil.”
Devotion
This is a statement about what actually constitutes a good life. Someone with little money but genuine peace—rooted in the fear of the Lord, in right relationships, in alignment with truth—has more than someone with great wealth but constant turmoil. The wealthy person is managing conflict, fighting off competitors, living in fear of losing what they have accumulated, or plagued by guilt about how they obtained it. The person with little but integrity sleeps at night. Wisdom here is not against wealth; it is against the pursuit of wealth at the cost of everything else. It says: a life structured around belonging to God, with enough material provision, is richer than a life structured around accumulation, however much you accumulate.
Today’s Step
Examine your own pursuits. Are you pursuing more at the cost of peace? What would it look like to prioritize peace instead?
Prayer
Lord, free me from the striving for more. Show me the places where ambition has become a tyrant. Help me to want enough for security, and You for everything else. Let me know the peace that comes from aligning my will with Yours.
