The Contentious Person
Conflict & Wisdom
Scripture
Proverbs 20:3
“It is to one's honor to avoid strife, but every fool is quick to quarrel.”
Devotion
There is a particular kind of person who is always ready for a fight—always taking offense, always finding something to argue about, always convinced they have been wronged. Wisdom characterizes this as foolish. The wise person, by contrast, knows that being right is not always worth the relationship, that winning an argument often means losing something more important, and that some battles are not worth fighting. This does not mean being a doormat or never standing up for truth. It means being discerning about which fights matter and which are ego. It means understanding that avoiding unnecessary strife is itself a form of honor—a sign that you have a framework bigger than your need to be right.
Today’s Step
Is there a quarrel you have been itching to have? Step back and ask: Is this worth the damage to the relationship?
Prayer
Lord, give me the wisdom to know which fights matter and which are just pride. Help me to be willing to let some things go in service of peace and relationship. Let me not be known as someone always quick to quarrel.
