Gratitude for Struggle
Thanksgiving & Gratitude
Scripture
Romans 5:3-4
“Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.”
Devotion
Paul invites us to be grateful not just for blessing but for struggle. This is countercultural and difficult. Our instinct is to curse struggle, to resent difficulty, to demand God remove it. Yet Scripture teaches that struggle produces something valuable: perseverance, character, hope. These are not small things. Character is who you are when no one is watching. Perseverance is your ability to continue despite difficulty. Hope is your confidence that difficulty is temporary and meaningful. These emerge only through struggle. This November, practice gratitude for what is hard. For the relationship that requires you to grow. For the work that stretches you. For the loss that teaches you what matters. For the disappointment that redirects you. Gratitude for struggle does not mean denying its pain but recognizing its purpose. It means trusting that God is not punishing you but refining you. As you practice this gratitude, you move from victim mentality ("Why is this happening to me?") to partnership mentality ("What is God creating in me through this?"). This shift in perspective is transformative. It does not eliminate difficulty, but it transforms your relationship to it. The struggle remains, but you are no longer alone in it. God is working. You are becoming. Be grateful for that.
Today’s Step
Name one current struggle. Can you identify one way it is shaping you? Can you be grateful for that growth?
Prayer
God, help me to see struggle differently. Help me to trust that difficulty serves purpose. Help me to be grateful for perseverance, character, and hope being built in me. Help me to not waste my suffering but to let it teach me.
