Thanksgiving & Gratitude

Scripture

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.”

Devotion

Paul makes a bold claim: giving thanks in all circumstances is God's will. Not just in good circumstances. In all circumstances. Including disappointment, illness, loss, frustration, uncertainty. This seems impossible. How can you be grateful when things are falling apart? And yet Paul insists: this is God's will. There is deep spiritual wisdom here. Gratitude is not about denying reality or pretending everything is fine. It is about finding what is genuinely good even in difficulty. In loss, there is love that was shared. In disappointment, there is clarification of values. In illness, there is compassion being learned. In uncertainty, there is opportunity to trust. Gratitude does not eliminate difficulty, but it transforms your relationship to it. It prevents difficulty from defining you. It opens you to learning and growth. This November, practice thanksgiving in difficulty. Not by forcing false positivity but by genuinely asking: "What is good here? What can I learn? How is God present?" This practice requires courage. It requires honesty. But it opens you to discovering grace you would have missed while only lamenting loss. As you practice this, you develop spiritual resilience—not the ability to avoid difficulty but the ability to find meaning and grace within it. This is the gift of Thanksgiving season: not escape from reality but transformation of your relationship to reality through gratitude.

Today’s Step

In one current difficulty, identify one genuine good. Not to deny the hardship, but to acknowledge what is also true.

Prayer

God, help me to find gratitude even in difficulty. Help me to trust that You are present in all circumstances. Help me to not deny hardship but to find grace within it. Help thanksgiving to transform me.
