December 24: Gratitude Revisited
Thanksgiving Integration
Scripture
Colossians 3:16-17
“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts... be thankful... And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”
Devotion
As December moves toward completion, we circle back to gratitude. November's theme returns. The spiritual practice that opened the final third of the year can complete it. By December's end, you have lived through another full quarter of your life. You have experienced joy and struggle, connection and solitude, growth and rest, change and stability. You have been shaped by circumstances, people, challenges, and grace. As you approach the New Year, gratitude is your foundation. Gratitude for what has been. Gratitude for who you have become. Gratitude for how you have been loved, challenged, and transformed. This gratitude does not deny hardship. It acknowledges that even in hardship, there has been learning, growth, grace, and meaning. Gratitude is the spiritual posture that moves you forward into a new year whole, complete, and open. Rather than entering the new year with resolutions born from shame and self-criticism, enter with gratitude born from honoring your journey. Rather than focusing on everything you should have done differently, focus on how you have grown and what you have learned. Rather than abandoning yourself to change, bring your whole self forward while remaining open to transformation. This is the gift of ending the year with gratitude: You are complete as you are, and you are open to becoming more.
Today’s Step
Reflect on the final quarter of the year. For what are you genuinely grateful? Not what you think you should be grateful for, but what you truly are grateful for?
Prayer
God, help me to end this year with genuine gratitude. Help me to honor my journey. Help me to see growth and grace. Help me to move into the new year whole, grateful, and open to Your continuing transformation.
