Year's End Approaching

Completion & Beginning

Scripture

Ecclesiastes 12:13

“Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of mankind.”

Devotion

The year nears its completion. In seven days, a new year begins. This is a significant threshold. A time to pause and reflect on what matters most. Ecclesiastes, after exploring meaning, power, pleasure, and achievement, concludes: What matters most is to honor God and obey His commands. Not success. Not comfort. Not recognition. Not wealth. Not pleasure. What matters is relationship with God and obedience to what God calls us toward. What if you entered the new year with this clarity? What if you let go of resolutions based on external achievement and instead focused on your relationship with God? What if your primary goal was not to be thinner, richer, or more successful, but to be more loving, more faithful, more truthful, more kind, more just? What if you measured success not by what you accomplished but by how you loved, how you served, and how you honored God? This is a different kind of new year. Not self-improvement but spiritual deepening. Not achievement but transformation. Not doing more but being more. And paradoxically, when you focus on being—on your spiritual core—doing flows from that. You naturally treat people better. You naturally work with integrity. You naturally serve. You naturally grow. Not from striving but from being rooted in what matters most.

Today’s Step

What would it mean for you to make your primary focus in the new year not achievement but your relationship with God and obedience to His call?

Prayer

God, help me to end this year focused on what matters most: You. Help me to enter the new year not with resolutions born of shame but with commitment to deepening my relationship with You. Help me to obey Your call. Help me to let spiritual transformation guide my year.
