Bearing Fruit Through Abiding
Connection & Productivity
Scripture
John 15:4-5
“Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.”
Devotion
The image is deliberately botanical: fruit is not produced through effort or willpower but through a living connection that nourishes the branch from within. You cannot think your way into fruit. You cannot work hard enough to generate fruit. Fruit is the natural overflow of a living connection. This completely reframes the Christian life. If you spend all your time focused on productivity—on being successful, impressive, or effective—you may be missing the actual source of real fruit. What if your primary task is not to produce fruit but to maintain connection? What if fruit is what happens naturally when that connection is healthy?
Today’s Step
Evaluate your life: are you spending more energy on maintaining connection with Jesus or on producing results? What would need to change if you reversed those priorities?
Prayer
Jesus, I confess I have been working hard to produce fruit while neglecting the very connection that produces it. Help me to release my obsession with outcomes and to focus on staying close to You. As I remain in You, let the natural fruit of Your presence flow through my life.
