Transition to Eternity

Sacred Time

Scripture

Revelation 21:1-4

“Then I saw "a new heaven and a new earth," for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Now the dwelling of God is with mankind, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away."”

Devotion

John's vision speaks of a time beyond time. A reality beyond this reality. A transformation so complete that old things—death, mourning, crying, pain—pass away entirely. God's dwelling is with humankind. Intimacy beyond what we now experience. Restoration beyond what we can imagine. Healing beyond what is currently possible. This vision is not escapism. It is not denial of present reality. It is perspective. It is the ultimate answer to suffering: Yes, suffering is real. Yes, difficulty is real. And it is not forever. It is temporary. It is not the final word. The final word is healing, restoration, reunion, joy. The transition from one year to the next echoes this larger reality: Old things pass away. New things come. What seemed important fades. What is true remains. What was broken is restored. As you close this year and enter the next, remember that you are part of this story. Your life is not just contained in one year or another, but in the arc of God's redemptive story that moves toward ultimate restoration. You are part of something that will end in joy. You are part of something that will end in God's presence. You are part of something that will end in tears being wiped away, pain being healed, death being overcome. This is your hope. This is what sustains you. Hold this vision as you move forward.

Today’s Step

Reflect: How does John's vision of ultimate restoration change how you see your current struggles?

Prayer

God, help me to see my life within the context of Your ultimate restoration. Help me to trust that this is not all there is. Help me to have hope in Your future. Help me to live in light of Your eternal promises.
