A Soft Answer
Wisdom in Conflict
Scripture
Proverbs 15:1
“A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”
Devotion
We already learned this early in January, but it bears repetition in February because relationship is where this wisdom is most tested. When someone comes at you with anger or accusation, every instinct screams to defend yourself, to attack back, to prove them wrong. In that moment of tension, a soft answer is an act of tremendous strength. It does not mean you are weak or that you accept false accusations. It means you have chosen to de-escalate rather than escalate. A soft answer works like physics—it absorbs the force of anger rather than amplifying it. The person feels heard rather than attacked, and from that ground, actual dialogue becomes possible.
Today’s Step
The next time someone approaches you with anger or criticism, practice responding softly first. Notice what happens in the other person and in the dynamic.
Prayer
Lord, in the heat of conflict, help me to remember that my response shapes the outcome. Give me the presence of mind to choose gentleness even when I feel defensive. Let my soft answer be a bridge that connects rather than a wall that divides.
