Speaking Truth in Love

Honesty & Relationship

Scripture

Ephesians 4:15

“Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of Christ.”

Devotion

This passage presents a paradox: truth and love must both be present. Truth without love becomes cruelty. Love without truth becomes enabling. The mature life, and the mature community, requires both. Speaking truth in love means you tell someone a hard thing because you care about them, not to prove yourself right or to hurt them. It means your tone carries your genuine concern for their wellbeing. It is remarkably difficult, which is why many people opt for one or the other: either harsh truth or comfortable silence. But growth—both personal and communal—requires the maturity to hold both.

Today’s Step

Is there a truth someone needs to hear from you? Practice speaking it first silently to yourself, asking: Am I saying this because I love them? Would they believe that I have their best interest in mind?

Prayer

Lord, give me the maturity to speak truth in love. Help me to find the courage to say hard things when they need to be said, and the humility to make sure my tone conveys genuine care. Protect me from the cruelty of harsh truth and the complicity of comfortable lies.
