The Mouth of the Wise
Speech & Wisdom
Scripture
Proverbs 12:18
“The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.”
Devotion
Words are not neutral. They do something. Reckless words—words spoken without thought for their effect, words meant to wound or impress or control—penetrate like swords. They leave marks. By contrast, the tongue of the wise brings healing. The word "healing" here is shalom—not just the absence of harm but the presence of restoration. This is transformational wisdom: if you want to understand the difference between a wise life and a foolish one, listen. Listen to what comes out of your mouth. Listen to the pattern of your speech. Are you leaving wounds or bringing healing? This is not about always being nice; it is about considering before you speak whether your words will build or tear down. A wise person thinks about the impact of their words the way a builder thinks about the impact of their tools.
Today’s Step
Before you speak today, pause and ask: "Will this heal or wound?" Practice this in at least three conversations.
Prayer
Lord, I confess that my words have cut deeper than I intended more times than I can count. Teach me to think before I speak. Let my tongue be an instrument of healing, not harm. Guard my speech as if I were guarding another person's heart.
