The Lazy Hand

Diligence & Consequences

Scripture

Proverbs 6:6-8

“Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest.”

Devotion

The ant is not motivated by fear or external pressure. No one forces it to work; no boss stands over it. Yet it works with complete consistency, doing what is necessary at each season. The sluggard—the person characterized by laziness—waits for someone else to provide, to command, to motivate. He has abdicated the basic adult task of caring for himself and his household. This is not a proverb about working harder to become rich; it is a proverb about the dignity and freedom that comes from taking responsibility for yourself. When you do the work that falls to you—without waiting for external pressure or reward—you live with integrity. The ant does not work because it is motivated by wealth. It works because that is what it means to be an ant. Part of wisdom is recognizing what responsibility is yours to bear.

Today’s Step

Identify one area of your life where you have been waiting for motivation to strike. Do the work today whether you feel like it or not.

Prayer

Lord, give me the wisdom of the ant—not driven by shame or fear, but by the simple recognition that I am responsible for my own care and my own household. Deliver me from the laziness that waits for perfect conditions. Let me do what is mine to do.
