The Fool Who Despises Reproof

Correction & Growth

Scripture

Proverbs 15:32

“Those who disregard discipline despise themselves, but the one who heeds correction gains understanding.”

Devotion

Reproof is not punishment—it is a gift. When someone speaks a true word to you about a blind spot, a mistake, or a path you are on that leads nowhere, they are offering you the chance to course-correct before the consequences catch you. The person who hates reproof is not protecting themselves; they are guaranteeing that they will walk straight into the consequences they could have avoided. To despise correction is to effectively despise yourself—you are refusing the very tool that could help you become who you want to be. The person who heeds correction gains understanding, which means they do not have to learn everything the hard way through failure. They can learn some things through listening. This is a mark of maturity: the ability to hear a true word about yourself, even when it stings, and to let it reshape you.

Today’s Step

Ask someone whose judgment you trust: "What do I need to hear right now?" Then listen without explaining or defending yourself.

Prayer

Lord, make me someone who can receive correction without crumbling. Give me the maturity to hear a true word about myself and to let it transform me. Protect me from the pride that refuses reproof and the shame that cannot hear it.
