A Gentle Answer
Peace & Wisdom
Scripture
Proverbs 15:1
“A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”
Devotion
This is wisdom that operates like physics—it is describing the natural order of relational consequence. When someone comes at you with anger and you meet it with gentleness, something shifts. The nervous system recognizes it and calms. When you meet anger with anger, you are adding fuel to fire. This does not mean you allow abuse; it means you understand that your tone and approach have real power to either escalate or de-escalate a conflict. A gentle answer does not mean saying yes to everything or never speaking truth. It means speaking truth in a tone that the other person can actually receive, rather than in a tone designed to wound or prove you right. Wisdom here is simple: if you want to be heard, if you want your words to land, meet force with gentleness.
Today’s Step
The next time someone approaches you with anger or frustration, respond with a gentle answer. Notice what happens.
Prayer
Lord, teach me to be gentle without being weak. Help me to speak truth in a tone that heals rather than hardens. Let my gentleness be the strength that disarms conflict and opens hearts.
