Wisdom Knows When to Speak and When to Remain Silent

Words & Restraint

Scripture

Proverbs 17:28

“Even fools are thought wise if they keep silent, and discerning if they hold their tongue.”

Devotion

One of the most underestimated tools of wisdom is silence. The person who talks constantly reveals their foolishness through the sheer volume. The person who speaks rarely but thoughtfully preserves an air of wisdom—whether they are actually wise or not. But the deeper point is that wisdom knows the difference between situations that require speech and situations that require restraint. Sometimes the most loving thing is to not say what you are thinking. Sometimes the most powerful response is to not respond at all. Silence can be an act of strength, not weakness. It is the person who can hold their tongue who actually has power over their tongue.

Today’s Step

Today, practice strategic silence. Notice moments where you want to speak and pause to ask: Is this mine to say? Does this serve love?

Prayer

Lord, teach me the wisdom of silence. Help me to know when speech serves and when it harms. Give me the strength to hold my tongue when speaking would damage rather than build. Let my words be precious because they are not constant.
