The Richness of Simplicity
Contentment & Sufficiency
Scripture
1 Timothy 6:8
“If we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.”
Devotion
The equation here is simple: basic needs met equals contentment available. More than basic needs does not guarantee more contentment—it often guarantees the opposite, as the pursuit of more becomes addictive. The person satisfied with enough is infinitely wealthier than the person always wanting more. This does not mean poverty is spiritual; it means that somewhere above sufficiency and well below excess, there is a point of liberation. On one side of that point, people are stressed about survival. On the other side, people are stressed about having enough. But at that point of sufficiency—where needs are met and wants are minimal—there is peace. Simplicity is not deprivation; it is freedom.
Today’s Step
Examine what you need versus what you want. Where could you simplify? What would it look like to be content with less?
Prayer
Lord, free me from the treadmill of wanting more. Help me to recognize sufficiency when I find it. Teach me that simplicity is not a punishment but a pathway to peace. Let me be satisfied with enough.
