The Weight of Words
Communication & Impact
Scripture
Proverbs 18:21
“The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruits.”
Devotion
Your words are not neutral events. They carry weight. They have consequences. Words that encourage can literally change someone's trajectory—they can be the difference between someone trying again or giving up. Words that diminish can cut deep and create wounds that take years to heal. The person who loves their tongue—who learns to use words skillfully—will eat good fruit from that skill. But the person careless with words will eat bitter fruit. This is not primarily about grammar or eloquence; it is about responsibility. You have power in your words. That power can be used to build or to destroy. The wise person treats their words as the precious resource they are.
Today’s Step
Spend one day noticing your words. What are you building with them? What are you destroying? Make adjustments.
Prayer
Lord, make me aware of the power of my words. Help me to use them to build, to heal, to encourage. Forgive me for the careless words that have hurt. Guard my tongue so that it becomes an instrument of life, not death.
