Weeding and Pruning
Discipline & Refinement
Scripture
John 15:2
“He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.”
Devotion
Growth requires pruning. God removes what does not serve growth, and He trims back even fruitful branches so they produce more. This is not punishment but refinement. When God prunes, He acts like a gardener who loves the plant enough to make it uncomfortable for the sake of greater fruitfulness. You may feel this pruning in your life: relationships ending, opportunities closing, abilities being refined. This is not rejection but investment. The Stoics practiced similar discipline—eliminating unnecessary desires and activities to focus on what truly matters. They understood that freedom comes through elimination, not accumulation. What needs pruning in your life?
Today’s Step
Where is God pruning you? What relationships, habits, pursuits, or beliefs are being removed? Rather than resisting, ask God to show you the purpose. How might this pruning lead to greater fruitfulness?
Prayer
God of refinement, help me to accept Your pruning with grace rather than resentment. Help me to let go of relationships, habits, and pursuits that do not bear fruit. Help me to see Your discipline not as punishment but as love—the care of a gardener who wants my greatest flourishing. As You prune back my life, help me to trust that I will become more fruitful, not less. Let me bear fruit that glorifies You.
