The Practice of Contentment

Satisfaction & Sufficiency

Scripture

1 Timothy 6:6-8

“But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.”

Devotion

Contentment is not resignation or settling for less than your potential. It is a deliberate choice to appreciate what you have while still working toward growth. It is freedom from the endless treadmill of wanting more. In a culture that profits from your dissatisfaction, that markets constantly to your sense of lack, contentment is revolutionary. Scripture teaches that godliness with contentment is great gain. Freedom comes through releasing endless desires and appreciating enough. What is enough for you? When will having enough actually feel like enough?

Today’s Step

List ten things you already have that you are grateful for. Not ten things you still want—ten things you have. Let gratitude grow from there.

Prayer

God of sufficiency, help me to practice contentment. Help me to notice and appreciate what I already have rather than chasing endless wants. Help me to understand that having enough is true wealth. Free me from the anxiety of always wanting more.
