The Sluggard's Excuses
Responsibility & Maturity
Scripture
Proverbs 22:13
“The sluggard says, "There's a lion outside! I'll be murdered in the streets!"”
Devotion
The sluggard does not lack intelligence. He lacks discipline, and he has become creative about excusing it. Every obstacle becomes a reason not to try. He exaggerates the dangers until they seem insurmountable. The lion is probably not outside, but more importantly, even if it were, the real issue is not the lion. The real issue is the character that has decided it is easier to make excuses than to act. Wisdom sees through this pattern in ourselves. We can all become expert at explaining why now is not the time, why the circumstances are too difficult, why we need to wait for better conditions. But waiting for perfect conditions is another way of saying you will never begin. The person of wisdom accepts that action always happens in imperfect circumstances, and proceeds anyway.
Today’s Step
Identify the "lion" you have been using to justify inaction. Acknowledge it, and take one step toward the work anyway.
Prayer
Lord, strip away my creative excuses. Show me the comfort I have been choosing over growth. Give me the courage to act even when conditions are not perfect, and the discipline to stop explaining why I cannot.
