Folly and Wisdom

Distinction & Choice

Scripture

Proverbs 14:16

“The wise fear the Lord and shun evil, but a fool is hotheaded and yet feels secure.”

Devotion

The distinction between wisdom and folly is not first about intelligence; it is about orientation toward God. The wise person, rooted in the fear of the Lord, has ordered their life around avoiding evil. They understand that actions have consequences—some immediate, some delayed. They are willing to feel uncomfortable, to say no to immediate gratification, because they are thinking about the path their choices create. The fool, by contrast, acts on impulse. He is "hotheaded"—reactive, ruled by emotion and appetite. And then he feels secure, which is perhaps the most dangerous condition: confidence based on nothing real. The fool has no framework for thinking ahead, no anxiety about consequences, no humility about his own limitations. He is dangerous primarily to himself. Wisdom says: order your life around something greater than your impulses, and learn to recognize when comfort and security are actually signs of dangerous blindness.

Today’s Step

What impulse do you keep following that you know leads nowhere good? Today, interrupt that pattern once.

Prayer

Lord, awaken me from the false security of not thinking about consequences. Make me someone who fears You enough to say no to what is destroying me. Give me the courage to feel uncomfortable in service of what is true.
