Through the Struggle
Trials & Character
Scripture
Romans 5:3-5
“Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.”
Devotion
The path from suffering to hope runs through perseverance and character. You cannot skip the middle steps. Character is built through facing difficulty and continuing anyway. Perseverance is the muscle that develops when you keep going despite pain. Scripture teaches that this progression is real and valuable: suffering → perseverance → character → hope. Each step develops what the next requires. Trust the process. Your struggle is building the character and perseverance that will sustain the hope God offers.
Today’s Step
Where in your life can you see this progression—suffering producing perseverance producing character? Celebrate that growth. Continue persevering.
Prayer
God, help me to understand that my struggles are building perseverance and character. Help me to not give up in the middle but to keep going. Help me to trust that character and hope will emerge from my perseverance.
