Blessed Is the One
Happiness & Obedience
Scripture
Psalm 1:1-2
“Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night.”
Devotion
The psalm opens with a clear statement: blessedness is not random. It follows a particular pattern of behavior and orientation. The blessed person is characterized by what they refuse (to walk with the wicked, to stand in the way of sinners, to sit with mockers) and what they pursue (delight in God's law, meditation on it day and night). Blessedness is not feeling; it is a state that comes from living according to reality. When you orient yourself toward God's truth and away from destructiveness, you naturally experience the kind of flourishing that is called blessing. When you delight in God's word—not out of obligation but from genuine preference—meditation on it becomes natural. This is the opening image of the Psalter, and it sets the tone: the path to genuine happiness is clear, and it is paved with choices you make, day after day.
Today’s Step
What would it look like to truly delight in God's law? Not as obligation but as genuine desire? Spend time today pursuing that delight.
Prayer
Lord, teach me to delight in Your truth. I confess that I often approach Your word as obligation rather than treasure. Transform my heart so that I genuinely want what You offer, and let that wanting lead me into blessing.
