The Greatest Commandment
Love as the Foundation
Scripture
Matthew 22:37-39
“Jesus replied: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself."”
Devotion
All of Scripture, all of the law, all of the prophets hang on these two commands. Everything else flows from these two loves: toward God and toward neighbor. What makes this remarkable is the simplicity of it—no complicated rules, no exhausting system of obligations. Just love. But this simplicity is deceptive because love, real love, is the most demanding thing asked of human beings. It requires sacrifice, vulnerability, the willingness to put another's wellbeing above your own comfort. This is not sentimental love but covenantal love—the kind that commits to another's good whether you feel like it or not.
Today’s Step
Identify one person it is hardest for you to love. What would loving them look like today? Take one specific action.
Prayer
Lord, You command what feels impossible: to love You completely and to love others as myself. Yet I believe this is the path to everything that matters. Soften my heart. Break through my self-protection. Teach me to love the way You love—thoroughly, persistently, sacrificially.
