Community and Loneliness

Connection & Belonging

Scripture

1 John 1:7

“But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.”

Devotion

December is a season of gathering, of celebration with others, of connection. Yet for many, December is lonely. Some have lost loved ones. Some are estranged from family. Some are alone by circumstance or by choice. Some are surrounded by people but feel profoundly lonely. Into this reality, John speaks about fellowship. Walking in the light creates connection. It creates the possibility of genuine relationship—not the fake performance of Christmas happiness but real fellowship based on truth, vulnerability, and shared faith. If you are experiencing loneliness in December, know this: You are not alone. God is with you. And there are others who are also lonely, also struggling, also seeking connection. December invites you to reach out, to be honest about your experience, to seek or create community. This might not be your biological family. This might be friends who understand you, a faith community that holds you, strangers who become companions through shared struggle or shared grace. Community is not automatic; it requires vulnerability and effort. But it is possible. And it is powerful. If you are blessed with family and friends, remember those who are lonely. Reach out. Invite. Create space for others. Be a presence of God to someone who is isolated. Community is not about having the perfect gathering but about showing up for each other, being honest, accepting each other in our wholeness. This is what John means by walking in the light together. This is the fellowship December invites.

Today’s Step

Are you lonely in December? Can you reach out? If you are not lonely, can you reach out to someone who is?

Prayer

God, help me to find or create genuine connection in December. Help me to be honest about my loneliness if I experience it. Help me to reach out. Help me to be present to others who are lonely. Help me to walk in the light with others.
