Gifts that Matter
Generosity & Meaning
Scripture
1 Chronicles 29:14
“"But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this? Everything comes from you, and we have only given you what comes from your hand."”
Devotion
David speaks about gifts. Everything we have comes from God. All gifts originate in God's generosity. Therefore, when we give, we are giving back what God has given to us. This reframes gift-giving completely. It is not about giving impressive things or expensive things or impressive quantities of things. It is about giving what flows from genuine care, what reflects what God has entrusted to us. You have been entrusted with time—can you give that? You have been entrusted with attention—can you give that? You have been entrusted with compassion—can you give that? You have been entrusted with resources—can you give from those? You have been entrusted with skills or knowledge—can you share that? Real gifts are not transactions. They are expressions of care. The most valuable gifts are often the ones that cost little money but much thought and heart. A handwritten letter. Your presence. Your attention. Your time. Your willingness to listen. Your vulnerability. These gifts matter more than anything money can buy. This December, practice gift-giving that reflects David's wisdom. Give what flows from your genuine care. Give what reflects what God has entrusted to you. Give to deepen relationships, not to impress. Give to show people they are valued, not to prove your worth. Give in ways that reflect your authentic self and care. These gifts will be treasured.
Today’s Step
Who in your life needs a real gift—your presence, attention, or time? How can you give that?
Prayer
God, help me to give from my heart, not from obligation. Help me to recognize what I have been entrusted with. Help me to give in ways that reflect genuine care. Help my gifts to deepen relationships.
