Final Week: Forgiving and Releasing
Liberation & Peace
Scripture
Colossians 3:13-14
“Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.”
Devotion
The year is ending, and there is an invitation: Release. Forgive. Let go. Paul writes about forgiving as the Lord forgave us. This is not about condoning harm or pretending injury did not happen. This is about releasing the power of hurt to control your future. Perhaps someone hurt you this year. Perhaps you hurt someone. Perhaps you made mistakes. Perhaps you feel shame or regret. All of this can be released. Forgiveness is the spiritual practice that frees you. When you forgive, you stop being bound by what happened. You stop carrying resentment. You stop replaying the hurt. You choose freedom. This does not require the other person's apology or understanding. Forgiveness is something you do for yourself. It is releasing the weight of carrying the grudge, the anger, the hurt. As the year ends, practice forgiveness. Forgive yourself for mistakes, for not being perfect, for being human. Forgive others who hurt you, even if they don't know they hurt you or don't care. Forgive circumstances that were difficult, that did not go as you hoped. Forgiveness does not change the past. It changes how the past affects you. It frees you to enter the new year unburdened. It allows you to wear love as your binding principle. This is Paul's vision: Love that unites. Love that integrates. Love that frees you to move forward whole. This is the gift of forgiveness at year's end.
Today’s Step
Is there someone you need to forgive? Or something? Can you practice release?
Prayer
God, help me to forgive. Help me to release hurt, anger, and resentment. Help me to forgive myself and others. Help forgiveness to free me. Help me to enter the new year unburdened.
