The Power of Surrender
Yielding & Trust
Scripture
Matthew 26:39
“Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will."”
Devotion
Surrender is not passivity. Jesus did not surrender in resignation but in honesty and love. He expressed His true desire—that the cup be taken—but then yielded that desire to God's greater wisdom. This is the paradox: genuine surrender requires genuine expression of what you want. You cannot truly surrender what you have not acknowledged. Jesus was fully human in that garden, desiring life, fearing death. And in the midst of that very human reality, He surrendered to God's will. This is the height of strength. The Stoics taught something similar: express your judgment, then accept reality. Surrender is not about not having preferences; it's about holding your preferences with open hands, ready to release them when God's way is different.
Today’s Step
What are you struggling to surrender? State it honestly to God. What do you really want? Then ask: Am I willing to surrender this if Your will is different? Practice holding it lightly.
Prayer
God of surrender, teach me to bring my true desires to You without pretense or shame. Help me to say what I really want while holding it all with open hands. Give me the courage to surrender when surrender is right, trusting that Your will is wiser and better than mine. Let my yielding become my greatest strength, not my weakness.
