The Rhythm of Rest
Balance & Renewal
Scripture
Exodus 34:21
“Six days you shall work, but on the seventh day you shall rest; in plowing time and in harvest you shall rest.”
Devotion
Work and rest are not in opposition; they are partners in a rhythm that sustains life. God did not command rest because we are lazy but because we are human. Rest is not laziness but essential maintenance. When you ignore this rhythm, you do not demonstrate commitment; you demonstrate a failure to trust that God will sustain the work. You exhaust your capacity for virtue. The Stoics understood that we cannot practice virtue if we are exhausted. Our capacity for wisdom, patience, compassion, and courage all depend on adequate rest. In spring's season of busyness, when everything wants to grow and everything demands attention, this becomes even more important. You must protect your rest as fiercely as you protect your work.
Today’s Step
How is your rhythm of rest? Are you honoring it? If not, what needs to change? Choose one area where you will practice genuine rest this week. Make it non-negotiable.
Prayer
God of rhythm, help me to honor the rhythm of work and rest. Help me to work wholeheartedly when it is time to work and to rest completely when it is time to rest. Teach me that rest is not self-indulgence but obedience. Let my restored body and mind serve You better in all I do. Free me from the lie that constant productivity is the same as faithfulness.
