Before Destruction, Pride
Humility & Warning
Scripture
Proverbs 16:18
“Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.”
Devotion
This proverb is not describing punishment from God; it is describing simple cause and effect. When a person becomes convinced of their own superiority, when they stop listening, when they assume their way is best, they set themselves up for correction by reality. Pride makes you blind—it prevents you from seeing the gaps in your thinking, the ways you are wrong, the legitimate warnings others are trying to give you. The haughty spirit is one that has decided it does not need adjustment, does not need to learn, does not need help. That posture will inevitably meet a wall. Humility, by contrast, is what keeps you flexible enough to adapt, to correct course, to survive the inevitable challenges that life brings. Pride is not about feeling good about yourself; it is about losing the ability to be honest with yourself.
Today’s Step
Examine yourself: where are you most likely to be wrong but most convinced you are right? What would changing your mind about that require?
Prayer
Lord, humble me before circumstances have to. Show me the places where I am most blinded by my own certainty. Give me the grace to be wrong, to be corrected, and to actually change my mind when I should.
